Slater was a bright light in the British studio jewelry movement in the last quarter of the 20th century.
She studied at the Walsall School of Art, and then received a degree in silversmithing and jewelry at Sheffield City Polytechnic.
Slater was best known for her avant-garde designs and use of non-precious materials.
Her most recognizable works were crafted in the mid - 1980s. They were made from "Colorcore", a Formica Corporation product for kitchen worktops. These designs were granted a British Design Award in 1988.
