Pal Kepenyes brass/bronze sculpture of an elephant crafted from milagros
20th century
Milagros are charms used for protection and for good luck. The word Milagro in Spanish means “miracle” or “surprise” and people in the past and present use milagros as symbols to wish others good luck, good health, and hope for the future.
The sculpture stands 7 3/4" at tallest point 6 1/2" across x 2 1/2" wide at base.

Kepenyes - He began his studies at the School of Decorative Arts in Budapest and was jailed during the communist regime. In 1956, after the Hungarian Revolution, he moved to Paris where he studied at the School of Fine Arts. Kepenyes eventually settled in Mexico where are created much of his work. His bronze statues, doors, and jewelry are displayed in museums, galleries, and private collections in France, London, West Germany, Hungary, Mexico, Canada, Washington DC, New York etc.
